SCARLET RUNNER BEAN, also known as Scarlet Conqueror, Fire Bean, Mammoth, Giant Red, and White Dutch Runner

Like other runner beans, this variety is usually grown in the United States for its handsome dark green foliage and brilliant red flowers. The vigorous vines run up to 15 feet long and bear in 65 days from planting. The seeds, shaped like limas, range from glossy black to black-violet with dark red markings. This is not a great eating bean. Some people snap and cook the young pods, but most rate the taste only as fair and complain of the coarse texture. Grown in America since 1800, this is one of the oldest runners, first mentioned in 1750.
